For our winter, 2014 production, the Alabama School of Fine Arts Theatre Department presents Lillian Hellman’s 1934 classin The Children's Hour. In many ways ahead of its time, this play shocked the public in its initial production, but has lived on in revival after revival, as well as screen adaptations. Set in a small all-girls’ boarding school, The Children's Hour tells a tale which is cautionary on many levels. When a child’s false accusation sets off a storm of rumor and hysteria, two teachers’ lives and those of their loved ones are irrevocably ruined. The Children's Hour has been compared to :The Crucible in its anti McCarthy-era politics, The Bad Seed with its young antagonist, and even the real-life, tragic McMartin Preschool Scandal of the 1980's as it examines the corrosive effects of vicious lies.
